Transition Year

Transition Year Trip to Delphi

We met at the school at 8.15am sharp and on arrival everybody was in a good mood.A lot of the class had previously spoken to last years Transition Year class about Delphi and from what we were told it had everybody excited. We drove out of the school and everyone was shouting as usual but after about five minutes on the bus the noise died down. The drive was to be about four and a half hours so everybody came prepared - we had i pods, MP3 players, Nintendos, Playstation portables and even Suduko books. After about two hours on the road we stopped at a shop for drinks, food and coffee which we hoped would keep us awake for the rest of the journey At 12.30pm we arrived at the adventure centre where we met our Delphi co-ordinator Chuck. He explained to us the rules about Delphi, split us up into groups and then showed us to our rooms. At 1pm we were taken to lunch by Ted ( no one knew his real name) to where the teachers ate. We were such a small group that we were able to eat here for lunch the first day.

After lunch Chuck and Ellie, two of the instructers, collected us and took us to the high ropes, one of the scariest activities in the centre. This was six poles in the shape of a hexagon all joined together with thick steel wire. We had to walk around it with the ropes provided to keep our balance. It was terrifying and I froze as did many others in the group. Some people in the group were afraid of heights so we tried to encourage and support them to try and do the activity. After the high ropes we had to go rock climbing inside the gym - an activity some of us were good at and others terrible. We had dinner at 6pm and then watched a DVD called iRobot but due to technical difficulties ended up in bed a little earlier than anticipated. The room was a great laugh even though it was the teachers who chose who was in what room - it proved how strong we could become as a group.

The following morning we rose from the bed at 7.30 am to be in the queue for breakfast at a reasonable time. at 10.00am we met at the conservatorywhere we were joined by our instructors who took us to do team tasks and go on the zip line - an activity where you are on a line about thirty foot in the air . Those of us who were afraid of heights enjoyed it also - just to see the look on most peoples faces was one to laugh at ! After lunch we were taken by two more instructors Manu and Matt on a hill walk which turned out to be more like a mountain climb ! On the way up it was good but nothing compared to the way down. After a short spell of heavy rain and a steep slope - not many pupils could resist sliding down the hill - othyers had no choice ! After dinner we watched Borat in the conservatory. The teachers didnt seem too impressed with the DVD so they left for some P and Q ( as Ms White calls it ) to read their books.

We rose early the following morning and after breakfast we went kayaking which was excellent fun as a lot of people spent more time in the water than in the boats. After lunch we went on a thing called jacobs ladder. This was a ladder where you were tied to a harness and had to climb it as the gaps got bigger. This is where my fellow classmates Michael and Tony did very well considering they are both afraid of heights and they reached about twenty feet in the air as did everyone else. After dinner we went for a tiny forest walk and then went back to the gym and played dodgeball with another school followed by a few games.

The following morning we went to the river again to go pier jumping and have a quick swim before going home. We departed from Delphi at 11am and arrived home at 4pm Everybody enjoyed themselves and for me it was an unforgettable experince !

Some quotes about Delphi
Michael O Donnell: "Excellent"
Eric Heffernan; "It was excellent for us to get to know each other better and some unlikely friendships were formed "
Niall McEvoy"Brialliant"
Dara Carey " An unforgettable experience"
Stephen Dawson " It was good"
Ollie Browne "Great craic"

Transition Year Induction 2007/2008

Formal induction into the TY programme took place on Monday September 3rd and Tuesday 4th. During this two-day programme students identify specific personal goals for the year ahead. A formal mission statement was drawn up under the supervision of Ms. C. Merrick and Mr. S. Shane Hogan.

Part two of our Induction programme is a team building week away from the school environment. Delphi Adventure Centre, Leenane, Co. Galway provided the ideal setting for this programme. The centre has designed a comprehensive programme aimed at Transition Year students. Activities included kayaking, canoeing, surfing and several exhilarating land activities. Without modern technology and with no mobile phone coverage students are left with no other option whatsoever but to become involved in all activities.

We rate Delphi as a highlight each year. As has become commonplace, behaviour at the centre was exemplary with staff commending our students on their very high standard of behaviour and on the respect shown to instructors and staff at all times.

C.B.S. Transition Year students prove to be an Innovative Bunch!
