CBS CHARLEVILLE UNDER-14 SOCCER TEAM IN MUNSTER FINAL
CBS Charleville played CBS Mount Sion from Waterford in the semi-final of the Munster Minor Trophy on Thursday 11th February. This is an under-14 knockout competition for schools of 300 boys or less.
After a delayed start due to the severe cold and frost, the Charleville team dominated the match from the kick-off. Outstanding teamwork led to an opening goal after 10 minutes of play, scored by centre forward Darren Casey. Charleville failed to convert many further scoring opportunities during the first half which finished 1-0.
Mount Sion began the second half with great determination and Charleville goalkeeper Brian O’Connell put in a great performance to keep his team in the lead. With 15 minutes remaining in a very evenly balanced second half, a solo run by Darren Butler from deep inside his own half led to a well-taken strike by Charleville Captain Tony Whitehead. This was the last goal of the match, Charleville finishing winners by 2-0.
CBS Charleville now advance to the final of the final of the Munster Minor Trophy, and are automatically entered at the quarter-final stages of Munster Minor Cup, a competition open to schools of all sizes. Our opponents in the Cup quarter final will be CBS Sexton Street Limerick. The other Minor Trophy finalists have yet to be decided.
FAI MUNSTER SCHOOLS JUNIOR CUP SOCCER FINAL
Charleville CBS 2 – 1 St. Brendan’s, Killarney
Two first half goals for Charleville were enough to snatch a win over St. Brendan’s College Killarney in yesterdays FAI Munster Schools Junior Soccer Cup Final at Moatville
Charleville started brightly and took the lead after just five minutes. Gavin Kelleher came close with a header at the front post only to be denied by the St. Brendan’s keeper who could only deflect the ball into the path of Gary Ward who put Charleville 1-0 up from six yards out
St. Brendan’s soon settled into the game and began to dominate, putting Charleville on the back foot, with some good passages of play. They were rewarded for their dominance in the 22nd minute when they won a free-kick 30 yards out. The St Brendan’s striker scored with an unstoppable shot into the top corner, leaving Matt Roche with no chance in the Charleville goal.
Charleville responded quickly after Pa Callaghan was taken down in the box by the St. Brendan’s keeper, who was yellow carded for the offence. Pa Callaghan converted from the spot in the 25th minute giving Charleville the lead once more.
St. Brendan’s controlled the game in the 2nd half putting the Charleville defence under severe pressure, going close on several occasions only to be denied by a couple of fine saves by Matt Roche and good defending from the back four. St. Brendan’s thought they had equalised in the 56th minute after a powerful shot came back off the crossbar, the Killarney striker was on hand to head the ball into the empty net only to have been adjudged to be offside by the linesman.
Despite constant pressure from St. Brendan’s for the rest of the game, Charleville managed to hold out until the final whistle.

Charleville C.B.S. 3 - 4 Presentation College, Headford
A late Charleville comeback was not enough to progress to the All Ireland Schools Final as they were defeated 4 - 3 by Connacht champions Presentation College, Headford in Shannon last Friday
Headford got off to a perfect start when they took the lead in under five minutes when their striker scored the first of his three goals in the game, beating Matt Roche from a tight angle. Charleville were quick to respond and equalised when Pa O'Callaghan got on the end of a through ball by Shane Dillon to slot the ball past the keeper into the bottom corner. Charleville started to get into the game and began to put Headford under pressure, despite their possession Charleville could not find the net and soon found themselves 2 - 1 down with the Headford striker grabbing his second of the game. Things went from bad to worse for Charleville when an own goal made the score 3 - 1 at half time.
Shortly after half time Headfords impressive striker found the net again after a great solo run to complete his hat - trick. The game looked over as a contest and Headford began to ease off and let their opponents back into the game. Charleville who had a penalty shout waved away by the referee gave themselves a lifeline when they were awarded a free kick 30 yards out, Gary Ward gave the keeper no chance with a shot that was always heading for the top corner. Charleville had most of the chances from here on, hitting both the post and the crossbar in the space of a few minutes. Headford began to lose concentration and gave away a free kick in a dangerous position to give Gary Ward the chance to bring Charleville within a goal. It was a chance he did not waste and beat the keeper for a second time with a perfectly placed shot that went in off the post
Despite a good second half performance from Charleville it was not to be their day. Headford had chances to put the game beyond doubt only to be denied by Matt Roche on several occasions
