CBS Charleville Makes Schools Rugby History
CBS CHarleville 26
Villiers School Limerick 12
History was made at Bruff RFC grounds , as for the first time ever a school in its first year of participation in rugby won a major Munster title, when CBS Charleville defeated Villiers Secondry School Limerick on a scoreline of 26 points to 12 points in the final of the King Cup Munster Schools Rugby Competition.
This victory was achieved in the first twenty minutesas Charleville blew their opponents off the pitch with their physicality and will to win. Special mention to our two wingers Kieran Murphy and Brendan Woodage, who’s tackling was teak tough and committed throughout. Yhe first try was a gem after ten minutes. The pack drove forward through a number of phases before John Walsh found David Reidy who sublimely glided through a gap in defence, parted to Darren Sheehy who touched down. This also ensured that Darren is our top try scorer for the season with 6 tries to his credit. The next try came when Gary Boyce blocked down a kick twenty yards out which he gathered again and crashed over. Gary had an outstanding game as his will to win has to be seen to be believed.Next try was similar with Dylan McCarthy this time blocking down , gathering again and scoring. Dylan is amazing as this is his first year playing rugby and to be honest you would not know it as his overall display was top cllass. David Reidy converted one try and added a penalty . Villiers scored a good try of their own to leave the half time score at 20 points to 5 points in favour of Charleville.
The Limerick city boys put on huge pressure in the first fifteen minutes of the second half playing with the wind , but Charleville stood up to the challenge and held them out with serious defensive work. One tackle that stood out , and which brought a roar from the crowd , was by Alan Dennehy, Villiers eventually scored a fine try which they converted. David Reidy kicked two fabulous penalties to complete the scoring. The pack as a whole played very well throughout. John Madigan was prominent all day. James O Flynn led from the front playing a captains role while Conor Barry was solid and clever throughout.
The front row of Dylan Kennedy, David Sheehan and Daniel O Dwyer were outstanding.the centre partnership of Darren Sheehy and Kieran Ryan have got better as the seasonprogressed and they were class in this match causing problems continually for the Villiers defence. A team is only as good as its bench, most of who came on and contributed hansomely, Bertie Cagney, Tadgh O Sullivan, Shane O Rahilly, Patrick Moloney and Donal Cagney.

The 9th January was a historic occasion at shandrum rugby ground, as CBS Charleville played their first ever competitive rugby game. They had a great win and scored four tries in the process.
The first was a beautiful score with Dylan McCarthy taking a great lineout ball popping to John madigan who drove forward. The ball was recycled with Darren Sheehy drawing the last line of defence to put Brian Kiely in the clear to score. Gary Boyce got the next after good interplay from the whole pack. Brendan Woodage used all his pace and power to collect a pinpoint kick ahead from Dave Reidy and crash over for the third. The fourth came after a searing break from Darren Sheehy who offloaded to Dave Reidy to touch down under the posts. Dave also converted two tries and kicked a penalty. His decision making was outstanding all through.Darren Sheehy stood out in defence and attack and was my man of the match. Special mention for Dylan McCarthy, playing his first ever game of rugby, he put in a huge committed performance. Thank you to referee Patrick O Connell. We now play Bandon Grammer School in the last sixteen in Munster in February.

This was a cracking contest from start to finish. Big hits were the order of the day from both sides with Brendan Woodage, Gary Boyce and Darren Sheehy to the forefront. Mallow blazed into an early lead with two well taken tries from their speedy backline. Charleville responded well to being behind and the pack started to dominate none more so than John Madigan, Conor Barry and Conor O'Callaghan who drove forward with passion at every opportunity. All our try scorers came from the forwards. James O'Flynn (Captain) scored twice. The second was a beauty with at least 10 players handling before he crashed over. David Sheehan who was outstanding got another and Daniel O'Dwyer got the winner when he drove over from 15 yards out - no one was going to stop him such was his determination. Training now for 2 weeks and match then V St. Clements.
