MUNSTER SCHOOLS FINAL

The Munster final of the Irish Schools Strokeplay Championship took place in Doneraile on the 6th November. Weather conditions were very tough and the CBS team of Brian O’Shea, Niall McEvoy and John O’Keeffe were up against our old rivals from Patrician Academy Mallow. The team played extremely well but unfortunately Mallow proved too strong on the day and took the Munster title.

CBS Student Represents Ireland

Andrew Kelly, a sixth year student, was selected for the Irish under 18 Golf Team which competed in the Ireland v Wales match at Rosslare Golf Club on 7-8 April. Andrew played three matches in total, two singles and a foursomes. Ireland were beaten in the overall match but it was an excellent debut for Andrew.

This was Andrews first cap for Ireland but followed an impressive performance when he won all three singles matches while playing for Munster in the Boys Inter-Provincial Championship last summer at Cork Golf Club. Some of Andrews recent successes include high finishes in the Munster Boys 9th, Connacht Boys 8th, Leinster Boys 15th. Senior Scratch Cup Killarney 8th, Junior Scratch Cup Charleville 1st and Under 21 Munster Youths 5th.

Congratulations to Andrew on these magnificant achievements and we wish him well for his future golfing career.

Playing in bitterly cold, wet and windy conditions on a tough links course the team played extremely well and finished second to a very strong Sligo team who had won the Irish Schools Matchplay competition the day before. Congratulations to Andrew Kelly who shot a noteworthy 74 - the second best score of the day.

Before the long journey home the team were presented with All Ireland silver medals at a prizegiving cermony in the clubhouse. Well done to the golfers and their mentors Ms Anne McEvoy and Mr Tim O'Callaghan on this great result.

Charleville C.B.S. capture Munster Schools Strokeplay.

Conditions were extremely difficult for the Munster final of the Irish Schools Strokplay in Cahir Park. Incessant rain over the days leading up to the event made for a heavy underfoot course. When coupled with severe winds on the day and a downpour throughout the back nine it was truly a case of survival of the very brave.

The C.B.S. team of international panellist Andrew Kelly, Brian O'Shea and Jake O'Sullivan acquitted themselves well with a performance of true grit. A highly fancied Cobh outfit provided the opposition. Both schools had qualified from the earlier North and South Munster qualifying rounds to contest the final. Having had the more impressive score in qualifying, Cobh would have started as warm favourites.

Andrew Kelly, against a fellow international panellist really played outstanding golf and in a high quality contest had three strokes to spare. 3 birdies and a display of chipping and putting from the top drawer were the hallmarks of this fine performance.

Brian O'Shea was next out and despite having his opponent hole 2 putts from well over 20 yards range, Brian showed admirable composure. He holed out in top class fashion and against an opponent of rare quality he showed that he has a very bright future. Arriving on the 16th with a 2 stroke deficit Brian birdied to his opponent's par thus reducing the deficit to the minimum. The 17th and 18th were halved so that at the end of the 2nd match Charleville C.B.S. had a two stroke lead.

Jake O'Sullivan played in the anchor role and revelled in the position. He was never led and played beautiful golf throughout. An 18th hole birdie by a battling opponent saw Jake's lead reduced to 2 strokes to give Charleville an overall 4 stroke winning margin. They now go forward to contest the All Ireland Strokeplay final next April in the North of Ireland.

Congratulations!

CBS Charleville would like to congratulate Andrew Kelly who has been selected for the under 18 Irish boys golf panel, where 6 panel members will travel to The Netherlands to compete against other European countries. This is a brilliant achievement for Andrew who has put in a tremendous amount of work over the past year on the golf course to get to this level. We wish him well in his golfing career!
