Chess
We were drawn in Cork group 1 with the likes of previous winners such as Deerpark C.B.S., Colaiste An Spioraid Naomh and Douglas community school. We were relatively unknown and not a lot was known or expected of us.
This has been a hugely successful year for the schools chess team not only because of our 4 team members but by our substitutes. Our first match was when we went to Colaiste An Spioraid Naoimh of Cork city. After the past few years not a lot was expected of us but we sprung a huge surprise and got off to a great start by winning 3-1 with the team of Shane Sheedy at board 1 winning through checkmate as did Jack Duhig did on board 3 and Michael O’Donnell on board4 unfortunately Joseph O’Connell lost on board 2 which was a very close match. The team won 3-1.
As of a fantastic result on the first day we began to gain in confidence and we begun to look forward to hosting the next match against Douglas community school. The team was the same as it was on day 1 with Shane Sheedy, Jack Duhig, Michael O’Donnell and with a prime example of our substitutes doing a great job with Joseph O’Connell missing Cathal Casey filled in and won his game as did Jack Duhig with Shane Sheedy drawing, after a very close match Michael O’Donnell lost The team won 2.5-1.5. With two wins from two games the team has done fantastically well and we look forward to our next match on Tuesday the 23rd of March against Deerpark C.B.S. and if results go our way we will have a huge chance of going through to the nationals with a win or draw will guarantee us a spot in the national finals unbeaten.
